Within the book, science is taken no less seriously; it's merely rephrased narratively so that when you're finished following a carbon atom through its 200-million-year cycle of participation in various earthly communities you can actually identify with it. And identification is the first step toward empathy and respect.
In polymathic fashion, Harding repeats this feat on up the ladder of complexity, ranging through microbes and fungi all the way up to ecosystems and the entire ecosphere. And once there is even a vague sense of identification, the ecological crisis of our time is no longer just an abstract scientific fact but rather a felt empathic sense of pain and a moral call to action.
With respect to the short spiritual meditations on nature that are interspersed throughout the book, I feel a sense of kinship with Harding - and he has introduced me to places that my own spiritual nature travels have missed. This, despite the fact that Harding appears to adhere to a panpsychic metaphysics (not my cup of tea, but the tangent was short and so did not diminish the rest of the work for me).
This book is full of beautiful thoughts, but it's really that first beautiful thought that has so resonated with me - so much so that I feel the need to repeat it:

Stephan Harding has written in lucid English what each of us can do right now right where we live and transform our whole being into nature's most effective non-violent warriors. He transforms multiple academic 'disciplines' into practices you and I can adopt right now, transforming how we see and interact with the world in living nature friendly practices integrating everything we feel, sense, do, think, desire into nature friendly being.
The academics will have difficulty with it for all the usual academic psychoses we all hate, so let that run its course. Their students will find the book anyway; soon enough, the classrooms will be empty because the students have too much to learn for wasting their time on classrooms.
No industry will remain at war with nature for much longer. We will all soon be able to see exactly how to intervene non-violently on nature's behalf - on behalf of all of us and all living things all over the planet. And we will confidently do what we know must be done. Every one of begins right where we are. We learn one step at a time. We learn mostly from nature herself. We also learn from our own experiences. Either the academics will catch up and get back out front, or, like the whole of amoral science, and like the earth destroying industries, the academic profession will naturally be downsized appropriately.
I love the book because it guides me through the integration of a variety of nature-friendly exercises and practices that sharpen my perceptions of what is already here, and has been all along! I have been trained to look for other things - and, as many of us learn sooner or later, if we don't look for it, we might not see it. If we don't know what to look for, how might we know it when we see it? This book describes the practices for re-learning the re-animation of all life all around ourselves.
It isn't rocket science. Thank/think Gaia!
After reading David Abram's book "The Spell of the Sensuous" this book takes the subject even further.. Written by an Oxford Phd in Ecological Sciences.. the book explains the notion of Gaia in very understandable and compelling terms.. A must read for anyone who feels the direction that the scientific community has been taking for 400 years is misguided and lacking in a most crucial ethical standard.. the fact that everything in our field of sensory comprehension is actually as much alive as we are..
Got a lot out of the first couple of chapters, then it got too sciencey for me.
